Competition Information

Integrated Science & Business Innovation Challenge

How It Works

1. Individual Registration

Students apply as individuals or pairs from both colleges:

  • Daniels School of Business (Marketing, Finance, Economics, BAM, etc.)
  • College of Science (Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, etc.)

Statement of Purpose Application Prompt (doesn't need to be long)

  1. Who are you, and what perspective do you bring?
  2. What do you hope to gain from this experience?
  3. Why does integrating science and business matter?

Registration opens Feb 27 .

2. Cross-College Pairing

Registration closes March 13.

Participants who applied as individuals will be matched into pairs from both colleges.

We will review the applications and create pairs from individual applicants; individual students will be informed of pairings by March 23.

3. The Challenge

Essentially: “Wow us with an innovative idea that meaningfully integrates science and business.”

Students will create a poster to showcase their proposal for an innovative connection between science and business, and they will have an opportunity to defend their work before judges in poster session on April 3.

The emphasis here is on true integration—not parallel work, but collaborative synthesis.

Poster Session Format

Teams will create a professional display or poster that communicates:

  • The scientific foundation
  • The business opportunity or strategic insight
  • Target market and impact
  • Feasibility and implementation considerations
  • Clear value proposition

Presentations will take place in a formal poster showcase judged by faculty, industry professionals, and university leaders.

Awards (Total Prize Pool: $15,000)

  • Best Overall Integration
  • Best Business Insight
  • Excellence in Scientific Contribution
  • Fan Favorite Awards

Event Schedule: April 3 in Hall of Data Science and AI (DSAI)

  • 1:00–2:00 PM – Setup
  • 2:00–4:00 PM – Poster Showcase & Judging
  • 4:00–5:00 PM – Networking Reception, Awards & Remarks (Hors d’oeuvres will be served)
  • 5:00–6:00 PM – Cleanup

Why This Matters

Breakthrough ideas increasingly emerge at the intersection of disciplines.
Science drives discovery, and business drives impact.

This competition gives students the opportunity to practice collaboration across expertise, translate technical insight into real-world value, and experience how innovation truly happens. Also, this provides a platform to launch/promote the formation of the Integrated Science and Business Learning Community.
